A fade is not one haircut. Where the taper starts changes the shape of your whole head, which is why the same fade looks sharp on one person and slightly off on another.
Here is the short version our barbers use at the barbershop in Uluwatu, plus the words to ask for it with.
First, know the four heights
- Low fade — starts just above the ear. Subtle, works with almost everything.
- Mid fade — starts around the temple. The safest all-rounder.
- High fade — starts near the corner of the head. Strong contrast, makes the top look taller.
- Skin fade — taken down to bare skin at the bottom, at any of those heights.
Skin fade is a finish, not a height. You can have a low skin fade or a high skin fade, and they look nothing alike.
Round face
You want height on top and tight sides, so go high or mid and keep some length up there. A textured crop or a quiff adds the vertical line a round face is missing.
Avoid heavy weight around the ears. It widens the face at exactly the point you do not want widened.
Square face
You already have a strong jaw, so you do not need contrast to build one. A low or mid fade keeps things balanced.
A little softness or texture on top stops the whole head reading as one solid block.
Oval face
Almost anything works. This is the shape that can carry a high skin fade with a hard part without it fighting the features.

Long or narrow face
Keep the top shorter and leave a bit more weight on the sides. A low fade avoids stretching the face further.
A fringe brought forward shortens the face visually, which is the easiest fix there is.
Hairline and crown come next
A receding hairline is usually happier with a lower fade and a shorter, textured top — heavy contrast draws the eye straight to the corners.
A strong cowlick at the crown will fight a high fade. Your barber will spot it in the first thirty seconds and tell you.
Hair type changes the answer
Thick straight hair holds any shape you cut into it. Fine hair looks better with a little length left for weight.
Curly hair fades beautifully but grows out faster in appearance, so plan on a slightly tighter cycle.
How often to come back
A skin fade looks its sharpest for about ten days and good for two to three weeks. A low fade holds its shape longer, often three to four.
If you want the photo-day version, book the cut two days before, not the morning of.
Uluwatu adds salt and sun
Sea water and daily sun lighten and dry hair here faster than most places. A conditioner and a hat do more for a fade than any styling product.
On a skin fade, sunscreen on the newly exposed skin around the ears is worth remembering the first few days.

A basic haircut is IDR 200K and a skin fade IDR 250K at our shop, both finished with a hot towel. A cut with a shave is IDR 400K.
Do I need an appointment?
Walk in and we will fit you in as soon as a chair is free. Booking ahead is safer in peak season and for colour work.
What is the difference between a fade and a taper?
A taper only shortens the hair around the ears and neckline. A fade takes that gradient all the way up the sides.
Can you fade curly or Afro-textured hair?
Yes. The technique changes — more clipper-over-comb and more checking as it dries — but the result is the same clean gradient.
Bring a photo, not a name
Haircut names travel badly. What one shop calls a mid fade another calls a low, and a photo removes the argument entirely.
How to ask for it
Bring a photo, then name three things: the fade height, whether you want skin or a guard at the bottom, and how much length stays on top in centimetres.
