A straight razor shave takes about twice as long as shaving at home and feels nothing like it. Most of that time is preparation, and the preparation is the reason the result lasts.

Here is the whole thing, start to finish, as it runs at our barbershop in Uluwatu.

Step one: hot towels

A hot towel goes on for a few minutes to soften the beard and open the pores. Warm hair cuts cleanly; dry hair drags and tears.

Pre-shave oil goes on underneath so the blade glides rather than scrapes.

Step two: the lather

Lather is worked in with a brush, not squirted from a can. The brush lifts each hair away from the skin so the blade can take it at the base.

It also puts a cushion of warm water between steel and skin, which is most of what stops irritation before it starts.

Preparation is most of the job — the blade is the quick part.

Step three: two passes

The first pass goes with the grain and takes most of the length off. The second goes across or against it, and that is the one that gets you the finish you came for.

A single blade at a shallow angle cuts the hair at skin level instead of pulling it up and letting it snap back below the surface — which is exactly why straight-razor shaves cause fewer ingrown hairs than a five-blade cartridge.

Your barber re-lathers between passes. Shaving over bare skin is how people get burn at home.

Step four: cold towel and balm

A cold towel closes everything back down, then balm goes on. Alcohol splash is optional and we usually talk people out of it in this climate.

Does it hurt?

No. It is a firm, cool dragging sensation, and most people find it closer to relaxing than tense.

The only discomfort comes from moving. The one rule is stay still and let your barber move your head for you.

How close is it, really?

Closer than any cartridge razor, and it stays that way about a day longer.

The difference is most obvious on the neck, where multi-blade razors tend to skip and leave a shadow.

Who should skip it

  • Anyone with active acne, sunburn or open skin on the face — very common after a week of surfing.
  • Anyone on strong acne medication such as isotretinoin, which makes skin fragile.
  • Very curly beards prone to bad ingrowns, where a close shave can make things worse. A beard trim is the better call.

Hygiene, since people ask

A fresh blade every client, every time. Towels are single-use and the chair is wiped down between guests.

If a shop is not visibly doing that, it is a fair reason to walk out.

A clean finish holds a day longer than any cartridge razor manages.

Aftercare, and how often

Skip the gym and the ocean for a few hours, then sunscreen — freshly shaved skin burns quickly in Uluwatu.

Most guests come in every two to four weeks, and pair it with a cut.

Common questions about straight razor shaves

How long does a shave take?

About forty minutes with the towels, lather and two passes. It is not something to squeeze into a lunch break.

Is a new blade used every time?

Yes. A fresh blade per client, every time, with no exceptions.

Will it cause razor burn?

Far less than a cartridge razor, because one sharp blade at a shallow angle does not need repeated passes over the same skin.

Can I get a shave with a beard I want to keep?

Absolutely. We shave the neck and cheek lines clean and leave the beard shaped — that is a beard trim at IDR 150K.

What to do the night before

Do not shave at home. Two days of growth gives the blade something to take, and freshly shaved skin is more prone to irritation in the chair.

Skip strong exfoliants and retinol for a couple of days beforehand, too.

Pairing it with a cut

Most guests book the shave alongside a fade, which is why the combined price sits at IDR 400K rather than the two added together.

First time in the chair

Tell your barber it is your first straight razor shave. They will slow the first pass down and talk you through what is coming.

There is no technique to learn on your side. Sit back, breathe normally, and let them position your head.

Book a chair

A shave is IDR 200K, a beard trim IDR 150K, and a haircut with a shave IDR 400K. Walk in when a chair is free, or book ahead in peak season.
