Most piercing problems are not infections. They are irritation — from touching it, sleeping on it, or cleaning it far too aggressively.

Aftercare is deliberately boring. Do less, more consistently, and a piercing from our piercing studio in Uluwatu will settle on its own.

The whole routine

  • Rinse with sterile saline twice a day. That is it — no alcohol, no hydrogen peroxide, no tea tree oil.
  • Pat dry with clean paper towel. Cloth towels snag jewelry and carry bacteria.
  • Do not twist or rotate the jewelry. That old advice tears the healing channel open every time.
  • Hands off unless they are freshly washed.

Twice a day is a ceiling, not a target. Over-cleaning strips the skin and produces exactly the redness people then try to clean away.

Cartilage placements like helix and lobe combinations need patience, not scrubbing.

How long healing really takes

Lobes are quick — usually six to eight weeks. Cartilage is the patient one: helix, conch, industrial, rook and septum commonly take six to twelve months to be fully settled.

Navel piercings sit somewhere in between and are slowed down by waistbands, so loose clothing genuinely helps.

A piercing can look healed on the surface long before the channel inside is. That gap is why changing jewelry too early causes so much trouble.

Sleeping is the real problem

Nothing sets an ear piercing back like eight hours of body weight on it. A travel pillow with the hole under your ear is the oldest trick there is, and it works.

If you can, get piercings on the side you do not sleep on, or space two sides a few weeks apart.

Bali-specific: the ocean

Keep a fresh piercing out of the sea, pools and rice-paddy water for the first few weeks. Warm water full of bacteria is the fastest way to turn a clean piercing into an angry one.

If you are here to surf, plan lobes and cartilage around your water days, or leave the piercing until the end of the trip.

Humidity is the other factor. Sweat sitting under jewelry all day is worth an extra saline rinse after a hot ride home.

Irritation or infection?

Mild swelling, a little clear or straw-coloured crust, and tenderness for the first weeks are all normal and not a reason to panic.

Come and see us if you get spreading heat and redness, thick yellow or green discharge, throbbing pain that builds rather than fades, or a fever.

Leave the jewelry in either way. Taking it out can trap an infection under skin that closes over it.

Irritation bumps are not keloids

The small bump that appears beside a cartilage piercing is almost always an irritation bump, caused by pressure or an angle problem. It settles once the cause is removed.

True keloids are rare and genetic. If a bump is not improving after a few weeks, bring it in rather than treating it at home.

Common questions about piercing aftercare

Can I use sea salt instead of sterile saline?

Home-mixed salt water is easy to get wrong and usually ends up too strong, which dries and irritates. Sterile saline costs very little and removes the guesswork.

Why does my piercing smell?

That is usually dead skin and body oil around the jewelry, not infection. It disappears once the piercing is healed and you can remove and clean the jewelry properly.

Can I fly with a fresh piercing?

Yes. Cabin pressure does nothing to it. Just rinse after the flight — aircraft air is dry and hands touch far more surfaces than usual on travel days.

How soon can I swim after a piercing?

Give it at least three to four weeks, and longer for cartilage. When in doubt, ask us before your first surf.

Downsizing the bar

The bar you are pierced with is deliberately a little long, to give swelling somewhere to go.

Once the swelling settles — usually a few weeks — come back and let us fit a shorter one. It stops the jewelry catching and it speeds the rest of the heal up noticeably.

When to come back and see us

You do not need an appointment to have a piercing checked. Drop in, and if something needs adjusting we will do it there and then.

A two-minute look is almost always cheaper than a month of guessing.

Changing jewelry

Wait until the piercing is properly healed, then let us swap it the first time. Every price at the studio already includes the jewelry, and the case at the front desk stays open for changes later.

Not sure whether yours is ready? Send a photo on WhatsApp or drop past the studio — checking takes a minute and costs nothing.
